It Ain’t Easy Being a Musician
In the 21st Century…
Let me tell you about a friend of mine named Nick.
Nick loves music. More than anything else in the world.
He loves to write songs. He loves to perform. (And he’s really damn good.)
One problem, though: Nick is a musician in the 21st century.
Nick Dreams of ‘Making It’
You can imagine what that entails.
Nick dreams of getting up on stage and hearing the screams of his fans:
He dreams of touring the country in a super decked out tour bus:
Staying in all the best luxury hotels (they’re much more fun to trash…)
Oh yeah, I almost forgot.
Nick wouldn’t mind having a little mansion as his second home:
Nick Has Big Dreams
I hope you don’t think I’m making fun of Nick here.
Because that’s the furthest thing from what I want to do.
I mention Nick to you because I want you to understand the realities of being a musician right now in the 21st century.
Here’s a quick list of what Nick has had to learn how to do in his journey to become a rock ‘n roll star:
- Book Shows
- Record Demos
- Get CDs Printed Up
- Run Merch Tables at His Gigs
- Tour Logistics
- Social Media
- Building a Website
- Getting Traffic to That Website
- Accounting (all this music stuff gets financially complex real quick)
- And on and on…
And that’s just the beginning…
It got to the point where Nick was barely even making music anymore. He was too busy doing all the things he had to do to try and “make” it.
If You Want to Succeed in Music Today,
You Need to Make Two Fundamental Shifts in Attitude
What do you think?
Should Nick just cut all that stuff out and focus on his music?
Should he keep pounding the pavement trying to find a record label somewhere that will take him on and handle all that stuff?
Let me just tell you my answer straight-out: HELL NO.
Nick is doing exactly the right thing.
He realized two huge things that have made all the difference in his musical career.
If you don’t shift and accept these two new realities of the 21st century, then you can forget about ever making it–or even coming close.
